The first trailer for the live-action Patlabor movie has arrived, and boy howdy am I excited. Based on the classic anime series by Mamoru Oshii (director of Ghost in the Shell), Patlabor is about Tokyo Metropolitan Police Special Vehicle Section 2, which handles Tokyo's giant robot-related crimes — with their own giant robots.
The movie will be directed by Oshii, but my question is if the movie will actually be funny, like the original Patlabor OVAs and TV series, or if it will be dramatic and somber, like Oshii's Patlabor anime movies. There's a lot of humor to be mined out of regular cops whose beat just happens to including piloting giant mechs, and part of the original series' joy was seeing the more mundane office and character drama amidst the giant robot action setpieces. But after the fist-pump I involuntarily made after seeing the Patlabor draw its weapon in the video above, I'd pretty sure I'm going to go see The Next Generation either way.
