A couple of weeks ago, we wrote about Code 8, a mysterious project from Robbie and Stephen Amell. Now, the project has been unveiled, and it looks like an intriguing film project.
We speculated that the project was going to be released On Demand, but it turns out that the short film was just a teaser for a much larger project, one that is currently being funded on IndieGoGo.
Here’s the synopsis:
The film takes place in a world where 4% of the population are born with some type of supernatural ability. Instead of being billionaire superheroes, most ‘specials’ live in poverty and resort to crime, forcing the police to become more militarized.
The story follows a young man with special powers (Amell) struggling to find work as a day laborer. After a dispute over payment, he finds himself in a confrontation with a police officer (Kang) and the autonomous robots backing him up.
The short film was shot last summer, and now that their campaign has surpassed their initial goal of $200,000, they’re going to be shooting the entire thing.
Here’s the full short film:
It definitely leaves the audience wanting to see what happens next, and it really looks like’s something that Neill Blomkamp would have directed: robotic police officers, some pretty overt political themes, and so forth. We’re certainly interested in seeing where this goes.
You can pledge to the project here. $25 will get you a download, while $35 will get you a DVD ($40 will get you the Blu Ray).
