Update: The Hollywood Reporter says, while the initial reports were Mariah Carey was playing Commissioner Gordon, she’s in fact playing the mayor of Gotham City, which is much less exciting. Original story follows, with some minor edits to take this into consideration
When news of The Lego Batman Movie was announced, obviously it was going to be crazy. However, now things are getting really out of control, in a hilarious and very unexpected way, as Mariah Carey is voicing the mayor of Gotham City.
You read that right. Mariah Carey. The chart-topping, Grammy-winning Diva best-known for songs like “Vision of Love”, “Emotions”, “Always Be My Baby” and others, will provide the voice of the leader of Gotham City.
Mariah Carey. Her.
Deadline broke the news, which is just the latest in a pretty fantastic string of voice actors for the film. Will Arnett is reprising his role as Batman. He’ll be joined by Michael Cera as Robin and Rosario Dawson as Batgirl, assisted by Ralph Fiennes as Alfred and battle Zach Galifianakis as The Joker.
But Carey? In a Lego Batman movie? That’s a surprise. Carey has been very sporadic with her big screen performances. She went dramatic in The Butler and Precious, comedic with You Don’t Mess With the Zohan and Glitter, then popped up in a few other cameo roles. That’s pretty much it. This will be her first animated film and you have to think there’s a very good reason for her to play this role, outside of the sheer surprise of it.
Maybe there’s a Mariah Carey song in the script they wanted approval on. Maybe the Gotham City mayor has some singing scenes, or maybe it’s a male character with a female voice and that plays into the movie. Either way, it’s wild but also kind of awesome.
The Lego Batman Movie, directed by Chris McKay, opens February 10, 2017.
