This year’s genre television gave us high highs and low lows—sometimes on the same show! In no particular order, we’ve rounded up the year’s best moments, along with some of the absolute worst. SPOILERS AHEAD.
The human race is doomed. That’s what I take away from the final episode of Falling Skies, in which the human race is saved in such a slapdash and unconvincing manner, you sense that everyone concerned felt as though humanity actually deserves to perish. God, this show. What the hell happened?

Last night’s Falling Skies got off to a fantastic start—that opening sequence, showcasing the rubble of our world, dotted with alien corpses full of snakes, was beautiful. And seeing the renegade Pope as the heroic rescuer was fantastic. It was the set-up for a great episode... that didn’t quite materialize.
Call it the “Dead Show Walking” phenomenon. A TV show has already run out of ideas, it has no more sharks to jump, the plots are played out, and it’s clearly doomed. But it just... keeps... airing... episodes. What’s the worst example of a doomed show that kept airing that you’ve ever seen?

There was a lot wrong with last night’s Falling Skies episode—including an over-reliance on plot hammers and zany twists—but the show at least tried to do real character development. And this moment shows when they absolutely succeeded.
