While filming whales off of the Canary Islands recently, a documentary crew discovered a rare marine find — the body of an Architheuthis squid bobbing in open water. Sadly, the creature was extremely dead, but the documentarians were able to capture footage of this deceased beast.
This absolutely stunning image was taken in Spain's Canary Islands by astrophotographer Juan Carlos Casado. The image combines nine different photos and reveals the band of our Milky Way galaxy in a way our unaided eyes never could.
About 2,500 years ago, humans settled on the Canary Islands off the coast of Spain. They brought plentiful livestock with them to the once barren islands, creating a whole new ecosystem - one that was perfect for super-sized vultures.
