One small step for can, one giant leap for advertising. The makers of Pocari Sweat are looking to send a can of their powdered drink to the moon. If all goes according to plan, it will be the first time an object has been sent to the moon specifically for marketing purposes. It's official: nothing is sacred.
Otsuka, the company that makes Pocari Sweat, has announced its Lunar Dream Capsule Project, a plan to send a 1 kilogram container filled with drink powder and children's dreams to the moon.
That's right: children's dreams. Apparently, the proposed can contains a "dream capsule" that will contain a titanium plate engraved to replicate handwritten dreams submitted by children. Right above the powder. Apparently, that's supposed to make this more magical and less awful.

SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket is scheduled to transport the canister in October 2015—the rocket's first planned mission to the moon. It would be neat to see Falcon 9, which has already made three supply runs to the International Space Station, reach the moon, but it means that yet another part of our universe will be touched by advertising—and long before we have any people living there. I suppose we should be grateful, though, that Otsuka isn't taking its cues from The Tick's Chairface and trying to carve its logo in the surface.
