Warner Bros. has just announced a new Harry Potter movie that probably won't actually star Harry Potter. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is the first in a new series of movies set in the world of Harry Potter, and the screenplay will be written by J.K. Rowling herself.
Potter-philes surely know the title is based on the Hogwarts textbook of the same name. Rowling says the movie will star the book's "author", Newt Scamander, and be set in New York City 70 years before Harry Potter enrolled in the wizard school. Says Rowling:
It all started when Warner Bros. came to me with the suggestion of turning Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them into a film. I thought it was a fun idea, but the idea of seeing Newt Scamander, the supposed author of Fantastic Beasts, realized by another writer was difficult. Having lived for so long in my fictional universe, I feel very protective of it and I already knew a lot about Newt. As hard-core Harry Potter fans will know, I liked him so much that I even married his grandson, Rolf, to one of my favourite characters from the Harry Potter series, Luna Lovegood.
I was kind of hoping for a Harry Potter side-story where Neville Longbottom is a hard-boiled wizard/detective, but this is okay too.
