Arrrrrgggghh. Evangeline Lilly took to Instagram to reveal the new hairstyle she's sporting for her role as Hope Van Dyne in Ant-Man. I think we can safely assume that regardless of Lilly's character's name, she will be the de facto Janet Van Dye/Wasp of the Marvel cinematic universe.
Here's another shot of Lilly's 'do:
Obviously, Lilly will be Janet in all but name and relation to Hank Pym. So why am I still bitter about this?
I guess it's because I think the name does matter. The Marvel Cinematic Universe badly needs more female superheroes, and I'm bummed how it's downgraded Janet Van Dyne from Avengers co-founder to romantic interest in Ant-Man. But moreover, even if Lilly's Hope does kick ass, what if girls (or boys) want to see more of her adventures? Well, then they're screwed, because comics-wise Hope only shows up as a villainess in the non-canon A-Next series. There was a great opportunity for Marvel to attract new female comic fans here, and I think they've made it much more difficult than it needed to be.
Maybe a kindly comic store employee will explain the Janet/Hope/Wasp situation to them and direct them to Janet's stories, but I think we all know that's hardly a given.
