Director Bryan Singer says he can bring in new, young versions of Cyclops, Jean Grey, and even Storm in the upcoming Days of Future Past sequel X-Men: Apocalypse. But will he?
Singer was talking to Scifi Now when he confirmed the possibility of these mutants appearing in X-Men: Apocalypse. Here's exactly how it went down:
"My next goal is how did the X-Men come together? That story hasn't been told yet, so [Days Of Future Past] is the inbetweequel," laughs Singer.
"It's in between the birth of that relationship with Charles and Erik and the formation of the X-Men."
Of course, this means X-Men: Apocalypse is in the right time zone to revisit and recast iconic original characters Cyclops, Jean Grey and Storm.
Cyclops and Jean Grey, played by James Marsden and Famke Janssen, were killed in X-Men: The Last Stand (although Janssen reprised the role for dream sequences in The Wolverine), while Halle Berry returns as Storm for the post-apocalyptic segments of X-Men: Days Of Future Past.
"Yeah," Singer confirms when that exact question is put to him, "exactly."
"This movie is the right time to bring back young versions of these characters" isn't exactly the same as "I'm going to bring back young versions of these characters in this movie," but I'd say it's pretty close.
I think the odds are good this happens. The movie is supposed to be set in the '80s, when Cyclops, Storm and Jean Grey are all young and alive. If Apocalypse really is going to be about Xavier forming the actual X-Men team, I think Singer is morally obligated to at least have Cyclops and Jean Grey there at the beginning.
And since these characters would all be teens in the '80s — more or less — it makes sense to hire newer (and cheaper) actors over James Marsden, Famke Janssen and Halle Berry. (Also, the idea of Marsden and Janssen hanging out with young James MacAvoy Professor X seems really, really disconcerting.) Any predictions for who might play the three X-Men? And please don't say Shailene Woodley for Jean Grey.
