This isn't a huge surprise, since their appearance in Days of Future Past was dependent on that film's time travel plot, but we now have the word straight from the man himself: Patrick Stewart.

Stewart'll be on Wednesday's episode of Larry King Now, but an early clip has Stewart addressing the question about whether he'd be returning to the X-Men universe. The answer? "No. Nor Sir Ian McKellen, either."

Booooo. I mean. Yes, it makes no sense for the two of them to show up in Apocalypse. But every time we're denied the joy of these two sharing a screen, stage, photo, sidewalk, what have you, it is a tragedy. A little less joy in the world.

It seems like, cast-wise, Apocalypse is going to follow First Class' lead and have only the new, younger cast doing prequel stories. Stewart goes on to say:

I was learning quite a lot more about it last night, and it is going to be looking very much at the earlier lives of all our characters. And so I don't think we'll be making an appearance.

Sigh. We'll always have the dark, horrible future where nothing went right for them, I guess.
