Ash vs Evil Dead recently bumped up its return date from Halloween to October 2, and the gifts just keep coming. Here’s first look at season two’s big bad, a powerful demon named Baal who’s played by Joel Tobeck (Sons of Anarchy, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King).

At the recent Ash vs Evil Dead press room at San Diego Comic-Con, Bruce Campbell described the then-unnamed character as “a nasty fucker,” while producer Rob Tapert revealed “it’s somebody who was intimately connected to [Lucy Lawless’ character] Ruby. [This character] now knows that Ash is the chosen one, and he must be stopped at all costs.”

Whatever their past relationship, Baal clearly has it in for Ruby, too, as this first-look image declares loud and clear:

Physically, he doesn’t look too spooky or supernatural here. Just rather angry (and kinda greasy). But considering Ash vs Evil Dead’s deep affection for transforming its characters into the most hideous versions of themselves that they can possibly be ... he probably takes a turn for the worse. Much, much worse.
