There's no scorched earth in Nick Pedersen's Ultima series of post-apocalyptic images. Instead, Pedersen imagines a utopian world where most of humanity has vanished, giving plants and animals plenty of room to sprawl.
Pedersen's digital illustrations are hardly the first post-human pieces we've seen where nature has reclaimed the ruins of our civilization. But taken together, the complete 12-photo series has an epic feel to it, as his single masked man explores the world humanity left behind, a world where bridges, villages, and statues still stand, but are now home to the wildlife once kept away by human activity. Suddenly, cars and streetlights are viewed in a new context, from the point of view of someone who never lived with them.
