Earlier this week, producer Michael Bay started a bit of online riot when he revealed the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie reboot would no longer make the turtles mutants, but aliens.
So what does the movie's director Jonathan Liebesman (Wrath of the Titans) have to say about this controversy? We caught up with Liebesman at the Wrath junket, and asked him to address the fan concerns.
Do you have anything you would like to say to the fans on the heels of Bay's announcement?
Jonathan Liebesman: I think fans are going to be very happy. Kevin Eastman, one of the co-creators, and I have been stuck in a room for a few weeks with the writers. That's how we're doing it —with the co-creator. Anything is always going to tie back into the mythology. I think fans are going to be really excited when they see what's going on. Because a fan of TMNT, myself, I'm super excited about this stuff.
Do you have to get rid of words like Cowabunga? How do you incorporate that past character identity with the new movie?
You will see. You will see. I can't tell you anything yet.
And that was the end of that. However, we would like to mention this little tidbit the director fired off to Collider:
"Look, it's so funny-if everyone was such a die-hard fan, they would know that the TCRI canisters where the ooze comes from. That is alien ooze. Now I'm not saying what Michael said is exactly what the movie is, because we're sitting in a room now figuring everything out."
Which kind of sounds like back-peddling a wee bit. So maybe they will knock this whole "alien" thing was just knocked down to Alien Ooze-only, which would be A-OK in our books. And that way, the Mutant Turtles wouldn't have to change to Alien Turtles.
