In 2000, Nicolas Cage's copy of Action Comics No. 1, featuring the first appearance of Superman, was stolen, not to reappear until 2011. Now a comedic heist movie based on the theft is in the works, but it sounds like Cage won't be playing himself.
The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Lionsgate has picked up Action No. 1, by Reno 911 creators Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon. The film will be a highly fictionalized imagining of heist, revolving around a group of comic book fans who try to steal Nic Cage's prized comic.
The Cage role was written with Cage himself in mind, but it's apparently unlikely that he'll step into his own shoes for the film. Jason Statham may or may not be linked to the film, but it's not clear whether he would, hypothetically, play Cage or another part.
It's a shame, since Cage just had some practice playing himself when he played his own clone on SNL:
