The screenplay is being written by John Hilary Shepherd (Nurse Jackie). Like the book, the movie will take place an alternate 1880s Seattle, which has become a walled city overrun with "rotters," or zombies.Meanwhile, the Clarke Award-winning novel Zoo City by Lauren Beukes has been optioned by South African producer Helena Spring, after what SFX describes as "a furious international bidding war." The novel takes place in a Johannesburg ghetto inhabited by the underclass and their animal companions.
