Mary Anne Mohanraj has established an impressive career as a literary author, with her book Bodies in Motion, but she's also well known as a science fiction and erotica writer. And now she's combining both science fiction and erotica, in a project that needs your support. Mohanraj, who co-founded the ezine Strange Horizons, has written a new novel in stories called Demi Monde, and she's trying to raise $8000 by tomorrow morning. You can get a nice paperback edition, or a deluxe hardcover.
Here's how Mohanraj describes the book:
What would you do if the world were about to end? Many people would head straight to bed. A few might lie there with the covers pulled up over their heads, but many of us would choose something more — distracting.
On a planet far, far away, tensions are rising. Men against men, men against aliens — the players in this game are complex, and the average citizen doesn't really understand what's going on. They just want to go on with their life: go to work, go home, make love to their wife. Or wives. Or husbands. Or indeterminate gender human and/or alien partners.
War is breaking out and the whole world is going to hell, but in the demimonde, the half-world, people are still having sex. Lots of sex. And they are doing so in a set of interconnected stories, short and hot and sweet and sometimes a little sad. They are here from all over the galaxy, at the University of All Worlds. They're mostly human, or humanoid, although some of the aliens are pretty damn alien. You should see that thing with all the eyes.
I'm Mary Anne Mohanraj, and I'd really love to write these stories. I'll be e-mailing out stories as I finish them to my donors, at an expected rate of 1-2 stories a month, with a finished collection of roughly 12-20 stories (some longer, some shorter). I should take roughly a year to produce the entire book. I love illustrated books, so if enough funds come in, I plan to commission artists to illustrate the various editions. Words and pictures together make a super-sexy pairing.
