The Hunger Games
Director Gary Ross explains that he's attempting to replicate the books' often claustrophobic focus on Katniss's experiences:
"That's one of the fun things about it. There are times when you're viscerally inside [Jennifer Lawrence's] shoes, and that's the main experience. And there are other times when you're witnessing her the way they're witnessing her in the Game — and she's constantly being watched, which is one of the things that makes the book so compelling. But it's mainly an intense first-person experience, inside Katniss' shoes."
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
Here's more from writer Scott Z. Burns on David Fincher's adaptation of the Jules Verne novel:
"David and I had a really great conversation about who Captain Nemo was and what makes a guy like that happen in the world. As it turns out, Captain Nemo, even if you go back and look at what Jules Verne was doing, Captain Nemo is a guy who you find throughout history of being a guy who's a little bit ahead of his time both in terms of what he's capable of intellectually and what he's capable of in action. He was a revolutionary in a lot of ways and is a great sort of good bad guy. I love kind of bad guys who are a little morally complicated. It has Professor Aronnax in it and it has Ned Land and it's sort of kind of a triangle between those three guys. It's a great, big action thing. I mean, there's as much going on in it as I've ever put into 120 pages."
Lance Henriksen denies the rumors that he will be playing some variation of his Bishop character:
"Everybody's talking about that, but Ridley Scott hasn't called me, so I don't know what's going to happen. I love Ridley Scott, what can I say? We'll see what happens."
Millennium: The Movie
That said, Henriksen does feel strangely optimistic for a cinematic revival of his other famous sci-fi role, ex-FBI agent Frank Black:
"We get it from all over the world. People are clamoring for this thing. Chris Carter and Frank Spotnitz are interested, it's just a matter of who's going to step forward first and pull the trigger. It's ready to be done, and there have been millions of cards and letters going into Fox, to the point where about six months ago they went, ‘Stop.' And our answer to that was, ‘Double up.' We're trying to get them to crack and say, ‘OK, let's take the meeting.' Isn't this a great way to do it? It's all fan-based. I don't call them fans, I call them the tribe. Tribe members. And they'll all be in the front row when it happens. There are finished concepts, which is more important. The script is easy."
One can only assume that the Millennium movie will come out the same weekend as the Veronica Mars, Arrested Development, and Party Down films - the weekend of February 31, I'd say - but hey...you never know. [Fangoria]
Relativity is reportedly working on an adaptation of the Bible story, with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as the titular Goliath and Twilight's Taylor Lautner taking on the David role. The movie's initial description sounds a lot like "300, except with more Bible", and basically appears to be an attempt to make Goliath II, the Simpsons parody of cheesy action movie cliches, into an actual thing. We'll know the death of satire is officially upon us when the posters use the slogan, "This time, it's biblical." [/Film]
G.I. Joe 2: Retaliation
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson recently confirmed that Bruce Willis has indeed joined the movie, and he's continuing in his role as unofficial set reporter. This time, he's tweeted that Barbershop and Scary Movie 4 actor DeRay Davis has been cast in an unspecified role that the Rock would only describe as "ol dude." [IGN]
Human Centipede 2: Full Sequence
The movie has set a US release date set for October 7, 2011...so if you're wondering when we'll reach the end of Western civilization, that seems as likely a date as any. [ShockTillYouDrop]
Here's a trailer for this week's episode, the Mark Gatiss written "Night Terrors."
And here's an introduction for the episode, featuring Matt Smith.
SFX has a bunch of hints and clues for the episode. Here's a sample:
- It's 99.9% arc plot free.
- It's a small-scale, intimate, claustrophobic episode. The main stars are the shadows.
- It has the best use of sound design in the show since "Midnight".
- The direction and lighting make even the most mundane settings look eerie and otherworldly.
- The Doctor does something he hasn't done in a while.
- There's a twin dilemma.
- Amy's hair makes her easy to spot.

Community's Danny Pudi will be making an unspecified cameo appearance in the final season, because really all shows would benefit from random Danny Pudi cameos. [AOL TV]
Anchorman's David Koechner will reportedly appear in the fourth episode as "'Crazy Bob,' a jolly Buy More manager with whom Chuck and Sarah encounter at the company's Employee of the Year Convention." He will be joined by The Shield's Catherine Dent as Jane Robertson, a fellow Buy More manager and friend of Bob's. They'll encounter Chuck and Sarah at a Buy More convention in Hawaii. [TV Line]
