Should the Deadpool movie be PG-13 or R? We all have strong opinions on the subject of just how outrageous the Merc with a Mouth should be allowed to get. But not as strong as the character's creator, Rob Liefeld.
Comic book fans have a possessive relationship with their favorite character. They know exactly what that character would say, what they would do, and how they would do it. No comic book movie can be made without uproar from some comic fans, who know deep in their hearts that the movie has their particular favorite all wrong.
If this kind of possessiveness is common for fans, it has to be multiplied exponentially for people who actually created the characters. Usually it's kept under wraps, but every now and again it bubbles to the surface. Yesterday, Rob Liefield, the creator of Deadpool, boiled over in a couple of tweets about the idea of a PG-13 Deadpool.
Dear FOX studios, get your act together. Deadpool is not Green Lantern, not a family film. DP is "filthy" think Expendables $$ w/ RR
As the tweets progressed, they developed a theme that could also be thought of as an example of the things Deadpool might be saying.
Also FOX, find your balls and film the script from Rheese[sic] and Wernick. You will make loads of money and thank yourself later.
Dear FOX, these five will show up and slice your nutz if you screw DP up! http://twitpic.com/3c8ym2
The tweets continue, but are more reflective later on. Liefield says he's entered into the 'grumpy old man' phase of his life early, and this is why he's unloading on FOX with salty tweets.
I'm an outsider, but from what I've seen of Deadpool, PG-13 antics might suit the movie. The character I've seen is creative and wacky, but not really dirty. His humor is literally juvenile. Mostly he says, and does, the kind of things that a twelve-year-old boy thinks are dangerous and dirty, but adults don't see as a big deal. That's not a criticism. Part of the fun of the character is that he's so childish in a world where heroes are so overwrought and serious. A 'family-oriented' movie might be just the thing for him.
