A team of scientists in China have transmitted quantum information between protons 10 miles apart without the use of a traditional signal or network.
No, we're not "beaming down to the surface" yet. Quantum teleportation involves bonding two protons in so that when the quantum state of one proton is altered, the other gets altered in the same fashion as if they were still connected — thereby allowing quantum information to be passed between the two even if they're separated.
The research team, from the University of Science and Technology of China and Tsinghua University in Beijing, managed to transmit quantum information between Badaling in Beijing and Huailai in Hebel province, a total of 16 kilometers, while maintaining an average signal fidelity of 89 percent.
