Prog rock and science fiction have always gone hand in hand, but Coheed and Cambria has taken it further, creating elaborate narratives with each album. And now singer/guitarist Claudio Sanchez has teamed up with Peter David to write a novel.

Sanchez (an avowed fan of Ray Bradbury) tells MTV that the novel, Year of the Black Rainbow, should be accessible even if you haven't listened to all the band's music:

Basically it's the origin tale of the characters Coheed and Cambria. That's the concept behind this record. It's 352 pages. When we made our third record there was a literal counterpart of a graphic novel and when we worked on the follow-up I didn't have time to do that counterpart again. But this time there was room to really explore that avenue again. This story ends our ongoing narrative.
