Ryan Reynolds has found his costar in DC's upcoming Green Lantern movie. Gossip Girl star Blake Lively will play Carol Ferris, aircraft magnate, skilled pilot, Hal Jordan love interest, onetime supervillain, and, lately, superpowered defender of love itself.
Lively beat out an array of contenders to play Reynolds's costar in the upcoming movie, which we previously reported included Eva Green, Keri Russell, Jennifer Garner, and Diane Kruger. The movie has experienced some minor production delays, but it is currently slated to begin production this March. Directed by GoldenEye and Casino Royale's Martin Campbell, Green Lantern is on track for release on June 17, 2011.
As for Carol Ferris, the character has proven to be one of comics' more complicated romantic interests over her now fifty year history. Although she and Hal Jordan were always attracted to each other - indeed, they are probably each other's true love - their relationship never quite worked, whether it was Hal being too busy with his Green Lantern duties, Carol having to take over her father's company, Carol becoming a supervillain, Hal becoming a supervillain, or any number of other little things that ultimately doomed their romance. The part about Carol being a supervillain is maybe the most important part, as the early indications are that the movies will ultimately show her unwilling transformation into the villainous Star Sapphire.
