We may know him as someone who lives in a pineapple under the sea, but that doesn't mean that Spongebob Squarepants can't try out a new home every now and again - say, perhaps, in outer space? Cartooning genius Roger Langridge has been clearing out his virtual cupboard and has uncovered this little-seen official Spongebob strip that sees the character re-created as space hero Spongebuck Blasterpants. We're seeing a whole new franchise possibility here, people.Spongebuck is just one of a series of reinventions of poor Squarepants in the story, explains Langridge:
This is from a Spongebob Squarepants story I worked on in which Spongebob is reimagined in the styles of various old-time cartoonists. I remember thinking at the time that I'd been typecast...
Amongst those old-time strips Spongebob steps into are Terry And The Pirates, Little Nemo In Wonderland and Peanuts... although none of them have the verve of Spongebuck. If Frank Miller decides that he wants to drop out of the Buck Rogers movie, my vote's on Langridge to take his place and make this absorbent adventurer into the household name he deserves to be.
