Elton John's production company has just picked up the rights to Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's wildly theatrical musical adaptation of the Biblical story of Joseph. One of the most musical-y of all musicals, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat was so popular it resurrected the career of Donny Osmond.
The show features a gigantic children's choir (who stand around the edges of the stage to sing for most of the show) a modern day narrator, an Elvis-impersonating Pharaoh, and a mostly shirtless male lead. It's fabulous. And now, THR is reporting that Elton John will be turning the colorful spectacle into a movie. John will executive produce the film, along with Webber and Rice (which makes us happy that they're all aboard).
But oh my goodness, this movie is going to be insane. I wonder if Elton will play the Pharaoh? Or cameo as God? It could work.
